Smith leads steady start

Friday, April 11th, 2008
Graeme Smith capitalised on his good fortune at the toss and led a confident start on a sluggish pitch that started assisting the spinners as early as the first session. South Africa survived a few nervy moments but their ability to put away the loose balls steered them to 80 for 1 at lunch. The pitch didn’t throw up the demons that were predicted but there was enough good news for the spinners early on. India surprisingly went with just two specialist spinners, partly forced by Anil Kumble’s absence owing to injury. Both Harbhajan Singh, who came on as early as the ninth over, and Piyush Chawla extracted turn and bounce from the first-day surface. Chawla snapped up a wicket in his very first over, beating McKenzie with a ripping legbreak and offering Mahendra Singh Dhoni a regulation stumping. Dhoni became the first wicketkeeper to captain India in a Test but he saw his opening bowlers squander the new ball. Sreesanth had a perilously close lbw appeal turned down in the fourth ball of the match - against McKenzie, who shouldered arms to one that came in - but didn’t go on to make the batsmen play enough. Ishant Sharma cranked up close to 140kph but his loose balls, especially those on the pads, were clattered away. His six-over spell cost 35 and played a big part in South Africa easing in. This was only the seventh Test Kumble had missed at home and India could well feel his absence as the game wears on (it was also the first time since 1990 that India went into a home Test without both Kumble and Sachin Tendulkar). Harbhajan beat the bat on a few occasions, and managed both turn and bounce. But Smith made sure he cashed in on every chance to score, using the quick outfield to his advantage. He clipped the leg-side balls effortlessly and also showed his preference for the sweep. With such a long stride forward, he also negated the chance of being given out lbw. Smith will no doubt understand the importance of batting first, on a strip that may only get slower and lower. While South Africa didn’t make any changes from the side that pulled off an emphatic innings win in Ahmedabad, India decided to change three personnel. RP Singh and Irfan Pathan made way for Ishant and Yuvraj Singh, the extra batsman. Ishant returns after a two-Test break, owing to injury, while Yuvraj got a chance after being jettisoned after the infamous Sydney Test earlier in the year. source: google news http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.commonwealthtv.tv Tags:

Green tea helps beat superbugs

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008
Green tea can help beat superbugs according to Egyptian scientists speaking today (Monday 31 March 2008) at the Society for General Microbiology’s 162nd meeting being held this week at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The pharmacy researchers have shown that drinking green tea helps the action of important antibiotics in their fight against resistant superbugs, making them up to three times more effective. Green tea is a very common beverage in Egypt, and it is quite likely that patients will drink green tea while taking antibiotics. The medical researchers wanted to find out if green tea would interfere with the action of the antibiotics, have no effect, or increase the medicines’ effects. “We tested green tea in combination with antibiotics against 28 disease causing micro-organisms belonging to two different classes,” says Dr Mervat Kassem from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Alexandria University in Egypt. “In every single case green tea enhanced the bacteria-killing activity of the antibiotics. For example the killing effect of chloramphenicol was 99.99% better when taken with green tea than when taken on its own in some circumstances.” Green tea also made 20% of drug-resistant bacteria susceptible to one of the cephalosporin antibiotics. These are important antibiotics that new drug resistant strains of bacteria have evolved to resist. The results surprised the researchers, showing that in almost every case and for all types of antibiotics tested, drinking green tea at the same time as taking the medicines seemed to reduce the bacteria’s drug resistance, even in superbug strains, and increase the action of the antibiotics. In some cases, even a low concentration of green tea was effective. “Our results show that we should consider more seriously the natural products we consume in our everyday life,” says Dr Kassem. “In the future, we will be looking at other natural herb products such as marjoram and thyme to see whether they also contain active compounds which can help in the battle against drug resistant bacteria”. source: google news http://www.commonwealthtv.tv http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com Tags:

New slogan for party by rahul

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008
The Congress has fastened its belt to regain lost ground in Uttar Pradesh. It has now launched a Hisaab Maango campaign against the Mayawati government, asking for an account of work done by the state government. Congress president Sonia Gandhi remained silent on the rising prices, while Rahul Gandhi unveiled the new slogan of the party, from ‘Congress’s hand is with the common man’, to ‘both the congress’s hands are for the poor’. Sonia Gandhi has said that she is ready to allow her son Rahul Gandhi to go to jail with the rest of the party workers in UP for the jail bharo campaign. ‘’I think nothing can happen in Uttar Pradesh until our workers are ready to go to jail. Are all of you ready to go to jail? If need be, Rahul will go with you when you go to jail,'’ said Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in an attempt to evoke the enthusiasm among the party workers in UP. The Congress president means business and she made that clear to party workers in Kanpur. Her target, certainly, is Mayawati and the Bahujan Samaj Party. The plan is simple. The party is to ask the state government to give an account of its work during the Hisaab Maango campaign. And then the workers are to court arrest in the jail bharo campaign, wherein, Rahul may accompany the party workers. ‘’I have a new slogan that is usually kept in my mind. I want to say that both the Congress’s hand is with the poor,'’ said Rahul Gandhi, who is the general secretary of the Congress. Conspicuously absent in the speeches was any mention of the rising prices. The Gandhis believe that leading from the front is the best way to revive the party. However, How they deliver on this promise remains to be seen. source: google news http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.commonwealthtv.tv Tags:

Diets high in meat boost skin cancer risk

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007
An Australian study hints that diets with high amounts of meat and fat compared with those rich in vegetables and fruit appear to increase the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin — one of the most common forms of skin cancer. “Our study,” lead investigator Dr. Torukiri I. Ibiebele told Reuters Health, “shows that particularly for people who have a history of skin cancer, there is benefit in avoiding fatty foods, overly processed foods, and foods with high amounts of sugar.” The findings are published in the May issue of the Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Ibiebele, of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Brisbane and colleagues examined the dietary patterns of 1,360 people enrolled in a community-based skin cancer study. Using 38 food groups, the researchers established two major dietary types: a meat and fat pattern and a vegetable and fruit pattern. The meat and fat pattern diet was found to significantly increase the risk of squamous cell carcinoma. The risk was especially high in subjects with a history of skin cancer and who had greatest consumption of meat and fat. Conversely, the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin appeared to be significantly reduced among those who had a high consumption of fruit and vegetables. However, the investigators point out “this protective effect was mostly explained by the association with green leafy vegetables.” No association was seen between dietary patterns and cutaneous basal cell carcinoma — another common form of skin cancer. According to Ibiele, this study is the “first to report on skin cancer risk in relation to the habitually eating of a variety of foods as opposed to the traditional focus on individual foods.” Diet can apparently reduce risk, Ibiele concluded, as does “staying out of the sun during the peak hours, and use of sunscreen and protective clothing.”

ABHISHEK - AISHWARYA GET SET FOR THE BIG DAY

Thursday, April 19th, 2007
The three-day wedding extravaganza of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, which kicks off tomorrow, is set to be a hectic but fun-filled private affair for the Bachchans and the Rais who will get together at Prateeksha for the celebrations.
The much-hyped and out-of-bounds for the media wedding of Abhishek and Aishwarya, who 13 years after winning the Miss World crown is still referred to as one of the “most beautiful women in the world”, will be solemnised on April 20. The sangeet, sources said, will almost resemble a Bollywood set with mirrors, huge pillars and performances by Abhishek’s best friends, including Sikander Kher and Goldie Behl. Speculation has been rife that Hrithik Roshan too may perform at the ceremony. The couple is said to be preparing to the dance to their hit number “Kajra Re” at the ceremony. The mehndi ceremony the next day is likely to be a sober affair involving only close family and friends. The wedding, the culmination of three days of celebrations, will be held in Amitabh’s bungalow Prateeksha at around 5.30 pm on the auspicious day of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’. Select guests have been invited for the wedding, but some of Amitabh’s closest friends, including Anil and Tina Ambani, politician Amar Singh and Sahara head Subroto Roy, are expected to be permanent fixtures over the three days. From Bollywood, director Karan Johar and his mother Hiroo, director Goldie Behl and his wife Sonali Bendre, Anupam Kher, his wife Kirron and son Sikander are among the invitees. source : PTI. http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com   Tags:

Protesters burn effigies after Gere kisses Shilpa Shetty

Monday, April 16th, 2007
Richard Gere’s repeated kisses on the cheeks of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in an event to promote AIDS awareness sparked protests in India on Monday with demonstrators burning effigies of the actors.
Footage of the Hollywood star sweeping Shetty backwards in a dramatic embrace at the Sunday night event in New Delhi was repeatedly aired on news channels on Monday. Many saw the act as an outrage against Shetty’s modesty and Indian culture, though Shetty herself angrily dismissed the protests as an “over-reaction” that made India look silly. Groups of men burned and kicked effigies of the actors in protests across India, including in the northern Indian cities of New Delhi, Kanpur, Meerut and Varanasi as well as in the central city of Indore. Some called for the actors’ deaths. Others wanted public apologies. But Shetty, the winner of the “Celebrity Big Brother” reality TV show in Britain this year, said the reaction to the kiss made India look “regressive.” “I admit it went a little overboard but that was not the intention,” she said to a crowd of journalists and protesters that had besieged her film set in Mumbai on Monday evening. “He did not do anything obscene,” she said of Gere, adding that they had since spoken on the phone. “He apologized to me and told me to tell the media that he apologized.” She said Gere was only re-enacting his moves from the film “Shall We Dance” to entertain the audience and communicate in a Bollywood style as he did not speak Hindi. The clinch between the two stars had originally gone down well when it happened onstage at an event on Sunday night to encourage truckers — seen as a high-risk group in India’s fight against AIDS — to wear condoms during sex. They whooped with delight and whistled loudly as Gere swooped down on a visibly delighted Shetty to kiss her on her hand and a number of times on one side of her face. “No condom, no sex,” an ebullient 58-year-old Gere shouted in Hindi to thousands of truck drivers who roared his words back in unison at a dusty fairground in New Delhi. Indian authorities have been focusing on high-risk groups such as truckers, who have helped spread the virus across the country as many of them have sex with prostitutes during their journeys and infect their wives back home. source : reuters http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://mindbodynsoul.com Tags:

GOOGLE growing insanely

Sunday, March 18th, 2007
Silicon Valley, March 18. (PTI): While Google\’s phenomenal growth may by the envy of many, Microsoft Corp CEO Steve Ballmer criticised the internet company for trying to grow too fast. In a presentation at Stanford University\’s Graduate School of Business, Ballmer said Microsoft went from 24 to 75,000 people in nearly three decades, while Google had become a very large company in a fraction of that time. “They\’re trying to double in a year. I think that\’s insane, in my opinion,” Ballmer said. Microsoft, with a more managed growth, had been digesting a certain percentage of growth over many years.” “What that has allowed us to do is build up a base of capable people who can take on more capable people.” Ballmer also questioned Google\’s corporate culture of encouraging individual projects by employees. Google is known to allow its engineers devote 20 per cent of their work time to pet projects. “I don\’t really know if any one has proven that a random collection of people doing their own thing actually creates value. That doesn\’t create value, in my opinion,” he said. Playing down the efforts of Microsoft\’s fiercest rival, Ballmer described Google as a one-trick pony. “Google built one very good business. They only have one thing they do. Everything else is sort of cute,” Ballmer said. “We do a lot of things that are cute, too. I\’ll tell you about our robotics effort, for example, but that\’s not paying for me to come down to Stanford,” Ballmer said amidst huge laughs from the business students. “I like to refer to us as a two-trick pony, and that\’s rare in the history of business. Desktop software was a trick. Server was a trick. Our third trick is trying to do online, and our fourth trick is trying to do consumer electronics,” he said. Ballmer, who left the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1980 after a year to take up a job at Microsoft, said there are basically four stages in business: coming up with an idea, getting it to critical mass, milking it financially and then finding a new idea. He said, “Google is in the part of the cycle where they are milking,” acknowledging that\’s a fun stage. “That was the \’90s for us… or I would say the \’80s and \’90s.” Ballmer also noted that currently 60 per cent of the industry\’s computer engineering and programming graduates are coming from China and India. Recruiting them is getting harder because of immigration restrictions in the US. “With the current issues that there are with H-1B visas there\’s even more pressure,” Ballmer said. The H-1B visa gives its holder permission to work on a temporary basis in the US in a specialty occupation. Universal News http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com

Shilpa Shetty to be star attraction at Commonwealth day

Sunday, March 11th, 2007
London, March 11 (PTI) Indian actress Shilpa Shetty will be a star attraction at the Commonwealth Day celebrations in the British capital tomorrow where Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Tony Blair and representatives of more than 50 Commonwealth nations are expected to participate.
At the celebrations, Shetty, winner of the Celebrity Big Brother TV show recently, will give a “personal testimony” in which she will talk about her experience of coping with ethnic differences.
It caps a meteoric rise for Shetty that is matched only by the plummet from favour of Jade Goody, the Big Brother contestant who racially abused her on the Channel 4 show. Although Shetty, who is arriving here today, used to be better known for her sensual dancing than her political theorising, she now finds herself a sought-after ambassador for courtesy and tolerance. After winning the reality TV show, she had visited the House of Commons and had a meeting with the Prime Minister and members of his cabinet. Apart from the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, she will have in her audience Tory leader David Cameron and Liberal Democrats leader Sir Menzies Campbell. In her speech, Shetty will talk about her childhood in Mumbai and her awareness of the vastness of India with its “incredible diversity”. A pre-recorded message by the Queen will be broadcast to the congregation and all over the Commonwealth. In the message, she is expected to emphasise the need for people to respect and understand each other better. The Queen will call on the Commonwealth to “find our diversity a cause for celebration and a source of strength and unity.” PTI
