WWII vet, 84, claims $254M lottery prize

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007
CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - A World War II veteran and his family stepped forward Monday to claim a Powerball jackpot worth more than a quarter-billion dollars, one of the largest single-ticket lottery prizes in U.S. history. ADVERTISEMENT

Jim Wilson II, 84, and his wife, Shirley, 79, claimed the winning prize from last Wednesday’s drawing, along with their three sons. “I was absolutely astonished,” said Jim Wilson, a retired electrician who served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in Africa and Europe, at an afternoon news conference. “I couldn’t believe it, and still don’t.” He bought the winning ticket — with the numbers 9-19-29-42-53 and a Powerball number of 17 — at a grocery store in St. Louis County. The store will get $50,000. When the Wilsons learned they had won, they got professional financial advice before claiming the prize. Jim Wilson II has the option of receiving $254 million in 30 payments over 29 years, or accepting a lump-sum payment worth $120 million before taxes. The couple said they will share the money with their sons. The St. Louis family has been buying family Powerball tickets for years with the understanding that they’d share any winnings, the Missouri Lottery said. Two sons — Bill, 54, and Jim III, 59 — lost their jobs in the past year, though Bill Wilson has found a new one. Another son, Terry, 53, said he hasn’t had a vacation in 30 years and will probably go to Australia. The couple also said they will set aside money for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Wilsons’ prize is the 10th-largest single-ticket lottery prize in world history, with all 10 coming from the United States, Missouri Lottery officials said. The largest was a $365 million prize won by eight Nebraska meatpacking plant workers in February 2006

‘India-Pak made unprecedented progress on J&K’

Monday, January 29th, 2007
Islamabad, Jan 29 (PTI) India and Pakistan have made “unprecedented” progress on the Kashmir issue, Foreign Minister Khurshid M Kasuri has said while maintaining that no solution would be acceptable to Islamabad until it was agreeable to the Kashmiris. Kasuri said his government would resolve the Kashmir issue with consensus in Pakistan and take all decisions in the national interest and any proposed agreement would be discussed in the cabinet and taken to Parliament for debate. “We have made unprecedented progress towards solving the Kashmir issue in the last three years. Both countries should adopt realistic approach and solve all issues,” Kasuri said at a seminar by Pakistan Thinkers Forum in Lahore yesterday. Defending backchannel diplomacy, Kasuri said there was nothing unusual about secret talks but no solution would be acceptable to Pakistan until it was acceptable to Kashmiris. “Every single word is cleared by Foreign Office and even every comma and fullstop in the draft (on possible solutions to the Kashmir issue) is cleared by it. I would never advocate something that I don’t believe in,” he said. Kasuri said settlement of the Kashmir issue was in the interest of both the countries as they had reached a conclusion after 30 years of hostilities that talks were the only way out. On the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline (IPI), he said Pakistan will guided by national interest despite US objections. “There will be no compromise on Pakistan’s national interest. Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline is in our interest. Pakistan does not accepted pressure from any quarter,” he said. Thousands rally against Bush’s Iraq war

Sunday, January 28th, 2007
Washington, Jan 28 (PTI) Thousands of protestors, including Hollywood stars and civil rights leaders, came out on to the streets here opposing the war in Iraq ahead of a crucial debate and vote in the US Senate on the issue. The protestors, roughly estimated around 100,000, were addressed by several Hollywood stars, leaders of the civil rights movement and Congressmen critical of the manner in which President George w. Bush took America into the war in Iraq and the decision to send an additional 21,000 plus troops to the troubled country. “Thank you so much for the courage to stand up against this mean-spirited, vengeful administration. Your ongoing commitment to ending this war allows people in other parts of the world to remain hopeful that America has the stuff to become again a country that they can love and respect,” said actress Jane Fonda, a key Vietnam war era protestor. “Silence is no longer an option,” the 69-year old actress said to cheers The event, sponsored by the umbrella group ‘United For Peace and Justice’, started with a rally yesterday on the Mall and later marching towards the Capitol Hill. “George Bush has a habit of firing military leaders who tell him the Iraq war is failing. He can’t fire you. He can’t fire us. But we can fire him,” remarked senior House Democrat John Conyers, one of the speakers at the event with California Democrat Lynn Woolsey making the point that Bush’s request for additional troops is a waste of taxpayers money. ‘China, India must cooperate in stabilising global population’

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007
Anil K Joseph
Beijing, Jan 23 (PTI) China and India, the world’s two most populous nations, have initiated discussions on stabilising the global population, Beijing’s top official on family planning said here today. “You (India) have a very young Minister of Health and Family Welfare (Anbumani Ramadoss). Actually, we have discussed cooperation in this field (India-China cooperation in the stabilisation of the global population),” Minister of the National Population and Family Planning Commission, Zhang Weiqing said to a query at a press conference here. Ramadoss had talks with Zhang in Beijing in November 2005 during a visit to China. China and India should cooperate with each other for the stability of the world and also should implement family planning policies in both countries, Zhang said while briefing the media about China’s new family planning and population control policies. He noted that China and India enjoy a long history of friendship. Currently, the two countries are experiencing very fast growth, he said adding “both of our countries could play important roles in stabilising world population and also contribute to the development of civilisation of the international community.” PTI

Scorpion stings Vermont man on airplane

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007
By DAVID GRAM, Associated Press Writer Wed Jan 10, 9:41 AM ETMONTPELIER, Vt. - A scorpion stung David Sullivan on the back of his right leg, just below the knee, then continued up that leg and down the other, he believes, before getting him again in the shin. It wasn’t what he was expecting on a flight from Chicago to Vermont. Sullivan, a 46-year-old builder from Stowe, was aboard the United Airlines flight on the second leg of his trip home from San Francisco, where he and his wife Helena had been visiting their sons. He awoke from a nap shortly before landing and noticed something strange. “My right leg felt like it was asleep, but that was isolated to one spot, and it felt like it was being jabbed with a sharp piece of plastic or something.” The second sting came after the plane had landed and the Sullivans were waiting for their bags at the luggage carousel. Sullivan rolled up his cuff to investigate, and the scorpion fell out. “It felt like a shock, a tingly thing. Someone screamed, ‘It’s a scorpion,’” Sullivan recalled. Another passenger stepped on the two-inch arachnid, and someone suggested Sullivan seek medical help. He scooped up the scorpion and headed to the hospital in Burlington. His wife stopped at the United counter and was told the plane they were on had flown from Houston to Chicago. The Sullivans surmised the scorpion boarded in Texas. “The airlines tell you can’t bring water or shampoo on a plane,” Helena Sullivan said. But the scorpion did make it aboard, she said. United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said the incident “is something that we will investigate and look into. We’re very sorry for what happened. Our customer safety and security is our No. 1 priority.” Such incidents are not unheard of. An American Airlines flight was delayed for an hour in Toronto on Sunday after a passenger was stung by a scorpion that had made its way on board. Paramedics treated the man when the flight from Miami landed. The delay came when officials searched the aircraft to ensure no other critters had stowed away. Scorpion stings are rarely fatal, except to babies or older people with health problems, said Dr. Stephen Leffler, director of emergency services at Burlington’s Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital. “We don’t see many scorpion bites in Vermont,” Leffler said. For a healthy adult, a scorpion sting can mean numbness or shooting pain extending out from the sting, or flu-like symptoms, which Sullivan said he had the next day. He said he hadn’t seen the recent movie, “Snakes on a Plane,” starring Samuel L. Jackson. “I’m pretty selective about what I see,” Sullivan said. “Maybe I have to see it now source ASSOCIATED PRESS. http://blogs.mindbodynsoul.com http://www.mindbodynsoul.com Tags:

World’s smallest country with sea view - FOR SALE

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007
LONDON, Jan 8 (Reuters Life!) - For sale: the world’s smallest country with its own flag, stamps, currency and passports. Apply to Prince Michael of Sealand if you want to run your own nation, even if it is just a wartime fort perched on two concrete towers in the North Sea. Built in World War Two as an anti-aircraft base to repel German bombers, the derelict platform was taken over 40 years ago by retired army major Paddy Roy Bates who went to live there with his family. He declared the platform, perched seven miles off the east coast of England and just outside Britain’s territorial waters, to be the principality of Sealand. The self-styled Prince Roy adopted a flag, chose a national anthem and minted silver and gold coins. The family saw off an attempt by Britain’s Royal Navy to evict them and also an attempt in 1978 by a group of German and Dutch businessmen to seize Sealand by force. Roy, 85, now lives in Spain and his son Michael told BBC Radio on Monday his family had been approached by estate agents with clients “who wanted a bit more than a bit of real estate, they wanted autonomy.” He suggested Sealand, which has eight rooms in each tower, could be a base for online gambling or offshore banking. Asked to describe the delights of living on what he described as a cross between a house and a ship, the 54-year-old said: “The neighbors are very quiet. There is a good sea view.” Apply to Prince Michael of Sealand if you want to run your own nation, even if it is just a wartime fort perched on two concrete towers in the North Sea. Only Indian income of foreign firms taxable: SC

Monday, January 8th, 2007
New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) In a significant judgement, the Supreme Court has ruled that only the income earned by foreign firms from their operations in India was taxable and no tax can be levied on work done outside the country.
“Only such part of the income, as is attributable to the operations carried out in India, can be taxed in India,” a division bench of Justice S B Sinha and Justice Dalveer Bhandari said.
The judgement came on an appeal filed by Japanese engineering firm Ishikawajma-Harima Heavy Industries Ltd (IHHIL), challenging the Authority for Advance Rulings (Income Tax) decision that asked it to pay taxes. IHHIL had formed a consortium with Ballast Nedam International BV, Itochu Corporation, Mitsui & Co Ltd, Toyo Engineering Corporation and Toya Engineering (India) Ltd for setting up an LNG plant at Dahej in Gujarat on turnkey basis in 2001. The contract involved offshore and onshore supply and services, construction and erection of storage tanks. The apex court ruled since all parts of the transaction were carried out outside India, it could not have been taxed in the country. The fact that the contract was signed in India was of no consequence as all activities of offshore supply were outside India, it said and added that the income tax authority made a mistake. The company had argued it was not liable to pay tax as India had a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement with Japan and it did not receive any income for offshore supply and services in India.
